Department Organization Post

Hey, Saphie, your local plot!mod here. So I was talking in chat, and the Department wiki info is hopelessly out of date, some Departments aren't being used and we might want to find a new use for them or phase them out or merge them with other departments, and also a few departments need new Department Heads. This will all be Department stuff. Command and Council stuff will be handled separately.

There will be two posts on the subject. This will be the Department Re-organization Post. This post will be about department structure and electing new Department Heads, since those would most likely be characters that have been around a while so that the Command Crew knows they can handle it. The second post will be the Department Volunteer Post, after we have the department structure reorganized, nailed down, and finalized, then will will call for volunteers for the departments and I will reorganize them (or grab volunteers to reorganize them) on the wiki pages.

NEWBIES

Now that I have your attention with giant font, this post, and the next would be good for you to pay attention to. Part of the purpose of departments is get people to play Department Heads that sort of organize projects and CR opportunities for everyone to play around with between plots, and to give people excuses to have CR together. Scientific projects, adding infrastructure or architecture to the ship, researching virus specimens encountered on missions to find cures, flight and combat simulations, etc. etc. Different departments are also called on during emergencies to find solutions, like working to build ray guns to take down the bad guy or find cures for crazy diseases. Please participate in these discussions if you have questions about what the departments do, and ideas on structure itself, because the point is to make these department works as vehicles for CR, which obviously concerns you guys.

If you have any ideas for stuff that could improve things or help you get CR, please feel free to contribute. Just hold on volunteering your characters until the next post because we need the departments reorganized before we know who goes where. (However, when we do the volunteer post, please keep in mind that no matter how new you are, your character can serve in a department if they have the required skills or capacity to learn them).

SO YOU'RE INTERESTED IN PLAYING A DEPARTMENT HEAD...

Department Heads, on the other hand, should probably established characters in the department or suited to the department with players familiar with the game. ICly, they are chosen by Leon the captain and approved by the Council but we can usually handle that with a quick handwave.

OOCly, the players must be prepared to sink a little time into this. If your department is called on for something, you have to OOCly organize things, and also have to have a presence in the game of your character organizing things. OOCly, also, people want department-related things to do, and might have project ideas and you have to have your character around to handle that. Department Heads are a good role to have if you have the time, and have interest in organizing activities for others to do, and we need more of that going on.

Of course, if you aren't an old player but have a new character that might be really well suited to a department head and think you could handle it OOCly, please bring it up. While it'd probably be best to have Department Heads played by players that understand how the game mechanics work enough to help create CR opportunities, there are some new characters and players that might be incredibly well-suited to it, so if you have/are one chime up, and hopefully IC arrangements can be made somehow. The older player thing is just a suggestion, not a requirement.

THE NITTY GRITTY

Okay, onto the nitty gritty. In the comments, I'm going to do one for each department, as they currently stand, and what they each do. Under the relevant comment for the department, discuss stuff.

Topics that need to be discussed:

Are you fine with the department the way it is? Should the department functions remain the same, or should stuff be added, taken away or changed? If the department has no department head, do you have a character that might suit the job and the time OOCly to do it? Should the department be merged with another department? What things can the department do that might allow new players to get their characters involved? What activities can we have the department doing to give characters stuff to do? Are you new and do you have questions about the department that you'd like answers to so that when we do the volunteer post, you know what to volunteer them for?

As a note: Final decisions on structure will be not be decided by me. I'm just organizing the discussion as a volunteer. They will be decided by a mix of consensus, asking the main mods, and asking the players who currently play department heads, or ICly handle the department organization and appointments. If I made any mistakes on stuff or left something out, comment and let me know.

[Do not post until I have all the comments up and this note says you can. POST GO GO GO GO POST LIKE THE WIND]

I would like to possibly involve more people in this blacksmithing stuff and get a little blacksmith buddy group going. There are a lot of people that use metal weapons and there could even be a long-term project to work with engineering, science, and magic guys to augment weapons and give them upgrades if the players would like that, and try to keep the ground even between the guys who have swords and the guys who have laser guns that go pwew pwew.

It's also a skillset a lot of characters could easily pick up, making it ideal for newb characters good with their hands.

Mei-Xing would be slightly interested in learning blacksmithing. She has some knowledge of it, but no real experience.

She's mainly interested in it, however, because she wants to expand her knowledge of enchantment and artificing, and the best way to do that is to get in and get your hands dirty.

(She'll have some tough luck finding a teacher, I'll bet.)

The bridge crew doesn't seem to do a lot 'on-screen' as it were. I don't think I've ever seen a post for the bridge crew to actually play stuff out, as opposed to just handing down orders in plot posts or whatever.

I mean, I've been horribly inactive the last few months so maybe I'm just missing stuff. And I don't know how exciting it would be to play a bunch of people to just sit around reporting info that shows up on their consoles. But I think it might be nice to try some time?

Discussed in chat, but an IC-possibility: subdivisions? Some characters are obviously a little more knowledgeable when it comes to weapons, others would rather play repair-job in the engines and not touch weapons at all, and even more of them would rather be building stuff down in the city. This could be kind of a sub-head thing, even, to help take some pressure off of Billy. IE: having a senior staff member in charge of one particular area of the department, because seriously, it is a huge department.

Kaylee volunteered IC-ly to help with it a while back, but if there's ever a need for a co-head, she is (and therefore I am) more than willing to help out. I know Angie was also another possibility in Co-Heading, but I can't really speak for Manda...

...I don't even know if half of this makes sense I WILL LOOK BACK IN THE MORNING.

A FEW EDITS because it's late and my brain is not quite working

[personal profile] governorkang 2011-01-27 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Duties: Spying/gathering intel during missions, and on occasion, doing the same to fellow crewmembers that are suspicious.

Requirements to Join, if any: Ability to keep secrets, acting skills, and some level of ability to find out information. If you think your character has any useful talents, let Shae or Blue know, and they'll work with you to see if it can be fit in.

Also, before a potential is approached, they won't know about Intelligence at all, and they will not be told that they were spied on themselves, though they may figure it out later if they're ordered to spy on a future potential themselves.

More information can be found here.

Re: INTELLIGENCE

[personal profile] livestoannoy 2011-01-27 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
This one's veeeeeeerrry much still in the process of being formed. OOCly we've already got a bunch of people signed up, but ICly since everyone needs to be both scouted out and individually approached it's going to take a while to set up. Once we've got a few more people ICly in it it'll be a bit easier to get new people in, since we'll have a decent number of people we can set on surveillance.

(Also this will hopefully go faster when I'm not distracted by the whole 'moving interstate next week!' thing and can properly organise this better.)

One question, though - so far with these first few we've been specifically having someone assigned to spy on the potentials. Do people want to continue with that, or would it be better if we handwave and leave it as, "someone spied on them"?

Medic Training

[identity profile] so-pregnable.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think with whoever we get as head of medical, we should try to add more medic training and medics into the mix. Being a medic is something a lot of people could pick up and do, gives nonpowered people stuff to do during a fight (even DRAMATIC STUFF like them defending an injured person as they're trying to patch them up and OMG LIFE OR DEATH MEDICAL DRAMA), so more organization on that end might be good. I have Kon down as a medic, but that's just as emergencies since he has the training, and he'd likely better serve in his building-throwing half-alien wrecking ball capacity. We ought to have more people doing medic things, training people in medic things, and learning medic things.

For the big fights, that's a whole area of experience that can be played out that can get all fun and dramatic that people who can't fight well can do.

I'd actually love to play out some interdepartmental conflicts with regards to ethics or characters working on dangerous projects. Some more morally gray characters hanging around Science could be a lot of fun, as long as there's the understanding that ICly Luis will not be letting them do anything drastically dangerous or unethical (but if he doesn't know, on the other hand...)

If anybody else has any projects or ideas for stuff Science can do, please let me know here. Remember that they take assignments from regular crew members. In the past Science has chemically replicated medications, bred creatures and researched cures at the request of various crew members.

In addition to the Starfighter side of things, the Macross Quarter is in need of a number capable Bridge-bunnies as well, to operate a number of stations including communications, sensors and engineering among others.

Requirements are the same as the bridge crew for stacy:

Requirements to Join, if any: Ability to parse infomation quickly, ability to learn to work the consoles, tactical ability, abilities interpreting sensor information a plus, must be able to talk fast and take orders quickly, must be able stay calm in a crisis. All necessary skills can be taught, but people have to have the capacity to do all those things once taught.

Who to contact OOCly or ICly to join: As above or in addition contact ICly:'Vadum (Captain of the Quarter) or OOCly: Sylvar

Mei-Xing and Dean Winchester are pretty much the leaders right now, depending on who you ask.

They already have a base of operations, a West Coast Vault in the City. I believe it was Vault 19? I'd have to check my notes.

The entire status of the Strike Team's been shaky since Mica dropped the game, so Di and I are going to have to sit down with Will and hammer things out OOCly.

Maybe one way to get them more involved would be for like, Command or Council to hand out assignments? Like...idk, they could say "build us a death ray!" to Engineering, or ask Medical to give everyone physicals. Or...whatever.
