Calling all spies!

So, Shaela and I have been working on doing spy stuff with Kang and Marco, and we’re wondering if anyone would be interested in joining up a small spy network. Basically, how this would work is that Kang would be at the head of it – essentially directing the spies to where they need to go. He’d be the one to decide who to approach, and talk to them about joining up. (Although if we get enough people, he might appoint someone else as head and give orders to them)

Kang will also be letting Leon know that he’s got the beginnings of a spy network, but he won’t be saying who is in it (Possibly this could lead to some overlap with the Strike Team, depending on what people want to do).

As for what they’d do! It wouldn’t necessarily be spying-on-fellow-crewmembers stuff (and even then, that’d probably be just suspicious individuals and whatnot). A lot of would be like for missions, and gathering intel and that sort of thing.

So yes! Basically we’re interested in finding out if anyone might want to be involved in something like this. (Just keep in mind that potentials will be spied on themselves before being approached. And that we’d need to find ways for Kang - or one of the current spies – to realise that they might be suited for spy work in the first place.)

Mei-Xing would be rather useful. With Batman and Motoko gone, the only people on the ship that could surpass her in stealth are probably Jeka and the Spider-Men.

And she can always go astral, which opens up a whole other level of invisibility and information gathering. And she's always down for gathering dope on people, she was doing it for Motoko before the Major left.

As yet, neither Kang nor Marco know Pepper though, so we'd need to find a way for them to approach her. Possibly if Will agrees, Leon could suggest her to Kang?

Anyway, as I said in chat, if it's just espionage count Sofia in. Somebody can find out somehow that she can use her powers to eavesdrop and go "hey baby, how about working for me?"

Anyways, neither Kang nor Marco know her, so we would need to engineer that. Does she ever use her eavesdropping abilities on the ship? Perhaps Marco could catch her while in morph sometime.

Hmm, the fact that Renne's pretty noticeable does sadly count heavily against him - his illusion powers might have been able to help here, he can't keep this up for long. Certainly not for long enough to run surveillance long-term.

I can't think of how he'd work as a spy, unfortunately. Unless you have ideas for how he could successfully stay hidden and record information?

Jeka was part of the Legion Espionage Squad, and she is very, very good at what she does -- namely, bein' in ur brain, hijackin' ur senses. Also, she's a princess, so she knows how to do all of that polite political double-talk stuff, although it's not her strong point. She's mentioned her background in espionage a few times, so I figure either it's gotten around to Kang or he hears "illusionist" and goes "heck yes!"

And Ax will do it if Marco can convince Prince Jake it's a good idea :P

Oooh, nice! (Perhaps Kang heard through the tavern? Or, does Jeka know any of the other people who are going to be involved? One of them could recommend her.)

So, is illusions her only spy-related ability? /making lists here :P

WELL did you catch some of the recent emails? We were figuring that Marco talked to the others about this, and that they helped him scout out Kang (and decided Marco & Tobias could do it once they saw Kang in the sensoriums with his 'family'). Marco wouldn't have agreed if Jake told him not to, so.

Celena would perhaps be a good one for this. Part of her job for her kind was to gather information and should cases arise, perform certain tasks. Among her abilities that may influence her capabilities include illusions, telepathy, a near unfaultering memory. Her illusions can be kept up relatively long term. She can perform surveillance from the air with little chance of detection via the illusions.

Though she is still fairly restricted to being a dragon at current, I am thinking on her looking further into methods of shape-changing via her energies or other methods in time.

...Ooh, nice! (And the memory thing could be useful - we're still trying to figure out exactly how they'll record info. Though I'm not sure if they'd want to end up with all of their info in one individual's head - I'll have to talk to Shaela.)

Well, if her illusions can keep her hidden pretty well, the whole being-a-dragon-thing shouldn't be too much of a problem? :P

One question though - how well known are her abilities? Is it something that Kang or any of the others who'll be getting involved might know about? (I know Marco hasn't met her.) If not, we can find a way to engineer one of them finding out.

Points in his favour:
a) Prior experience (with the Doctor)
b) Expert in technology
c) Works both in engineering and in the medvac
d) Experienced telepaths have trouble reading him. (They can't read his intentions, they keep shifting)
e)Quiet, makes no waves.

Points against:
a) His prior experience ended with telling the Doctor the full story.

Ah, so lots of time spent being suddenly thrust into random place then? XD

Is he good enough with technology for hacking? That could be one potential kind of work for him to do - also if people can't read him, perhaps he'd be good at infiltration?

And hmm, finding a way for them to notice him is a tricky part. Does he know anyone who's already joining? If he does, we might be able to see if one of them could suggest that he has the "personality" for spy work. (If not, we might have to find a way to engineer some connections)

All the elf has to do is change his spell loadout. Disguise Self? Invisibility? Detect Thoughts? Symbol of Insanity? Uh, might need an official ruling on Scrying...

Do you know if Aibghalien knows Kang or anyone else joining up who might recommend him? I know Marco's met him, but he's only seen Aibghalien's offensive spells so he probably wouldn't think to suggest him unless he did see some of his sneakier spells.

Edit: Nevermind, Shaela just says Kang knows him :D

This is something Iniss has experience with, though it's doubtful Marco would be willing to use him or work with him for a couple reasons, I dunno about Kang

Yeah, Marco would probably argue like HELL against Iniss being involved in any which way. The fact that right now, all the spies Kang has are Animorphs also doesn't help.

...And Shaela says "maybe". If we do bring in Iniss though, it'd have to be later down the line - after Iniss has been separated from Tom, and when there are people other than the anis able to check him out. And Kang would probably have to keep this from the anis as well

Back home, Teyr did a lot of that with draconians serving Dragon Overlords and feeding information to the rest of Krynn (never for free; info is valuable, after all), since they had a... unique advantage.

yeah like what Ish said. and agree on overlap with strike team (which Dean will be speaking with Leon about how to re-organize with the Major gone). Dean's got knack for some of this with hunter investigations.

I'm not as yet how this will interact with the strike team - really it all depends on whether Leon decides to tell the two groups about each other - but it would definitely be useful.

Well, seeing as we already got Mei-Xing and Jeka, let's toss in our favorite web-slinger! Not only does he have his usual collection of powers, the costume he wears now (the Iron Spider costume), is easily jam packed with gear that could help in be all sneaky and stealthy!

It's not a power that she advertises a lot because it's rather uncomfortable to do on the ship, but Rhiow can 'sidle,' meaning she steps sideways out of the visible light spectrum, in essence making herself invisible. She can still be detected by motion sensors and infrared, though.

However, there are probably still quite a few people on the ship who don't realize that the kitty talks, and nobody pays attention to animals. This would certainly work to her advantage.

Awesome! Does Dean know about that ability? I imagine he'd be able to recommend her, assuming Di's happy to do that. (If he doesn't know about the sidle thing...well, the Animorphs at least would know how easy it is for animals to go unnoticed)

Her magic could possibly be useful as well, I think.
